About The Role

At Cleveland Clinic London (CCL), staff nurses are expected to provide effective and efficient care to the highest possible standard and ensure patient safety in accordance to agreed policies and guidelines.
Staff nurses are responsible for the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation care plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.

This role will require the post holder to demonstrate:
  • Proficiency and competence within day case (surgical and/or medical) nursing practice and provide specialist support and knowledge to patients and staff alike;
  • Able to manage and coordinate the safe and efficient flow of patients from admission to discharge;
  • Effective organisational and leadership skills and can deputise in the absence of the charge nurse;

    Working in the Day Case Unit, the unit will cater a multispecialty patient cohort for day surgery and medical day procedures including same day intravenous infusions. A mixture of long (11.5/9.5 hours) and short (7.5 hours) shifts are worked on by the nursing staff from Monday to Friday with some Saturday working requirement.

    Job Responsibilities:

    Clinical 


    Responsible for the planning and delivery of patient care whilst ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge within the Day Case Unit.
  • To act as advocate for patients at all times, whilst ensuring a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and having a regard for their beliefs and customs.
  • Recognises, responds to and appropriately manages emergency situations.
  • Carry out nursing procedure and treatment in accordance to policies and procedures as a minimum standard within the Day Case Unit
  • Admission and discharging of patients
  • Focused clinical assessment and vital signs taking/point of care testing as required
  • Safely administer medication and blood products as required
  • Cannulation and phlebotomy procedures
  • Providing advice and education to patients as the need arise
  • Complete all pertinent nursing documentation relevant to practice
  • Maintain standards of infection control and prevention at all times

    Leadership
  • Act as deputy charge nurse to all staff working within Day Case Unit: Exercise positive leadership; promote harmonious relations between all staff and work to develop high morale amongst all staff.
  • Manage the throughput in Day Case Unit and supervise all grades of staff in order to maintain a high standard of patient care. Ensure safe practice is carried out in all areas and undertake appropriate clinical skills teaching in own field of knowledge
  • Work alongside the Charge Nurse and other team members to ensure the smooth running of the department in an operational capacity on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that all team members are competent and adequately trained to undertake the roles required of them: Act as a facilitator / mentor as appropriate.
  • Maintain the training registry of the unit together with the Charge Nurse
  • Maintain good relationships with the wards and other departments. Attend meetings on behalf of the department as required and disseminate information back to departmental staff.
  • Be a good professional role model, using evidence based practice and relevant audit tools to achieve ever-increasing quality of care for patients.
  • Review/validate theatre lists on a daily basis and highlight/challenge any admission anomalies.
  • Expanded duties may include:
  • Coordinating departmental off duty.
  • Take responsibility for all health and safety matters. Ensure staff comply with Health & Safety instructions.
  • Undertake investigations of incident reports and complaints under the supervision of the Charge Nurse
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff as the need arise
  • Manage the sickness absence of team members in accordance with CCL’s sickness policy
  • Undertake individual performance reviews for your team. Set key objectives for all qualified staff following discussion with them and review as agreed with Charge nurse
  • Any other duties identified by the charge nurse (e.g. unit audits, research projects, etc)

    Professional
  • Will maintain a high standard of care and give courteous reception to all patients and visitors.
  • Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
  • Successfully complete all competency assessment document and required mandatory training as required for the post within the agreed time frame (ideally within the probationary period)
  • Will have read and understood all relevant policies and procedures identified by the line manager that is in scope of practice and will act in accordance with it (i.e. Data Protection/Confidentiality/Caldicott principles/ Health and Safety).
  • Maintain a high standard of care and give courteous reception to all patients and visitors.
  • Practice in a cost effective and cost aware manner
  • Communicate effectively with patients and fellow caregivers appropriately at all times
  • Report/escalate any incidents immediately to senior staff

About You

Education:
  • RGN level 1 (minimum)

    Certifications:

  • Current adult nursing registration (First Level) through the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) required with no practice restrictions - Essential
  • Post graduate certifications/courses completed related to the post will be advantageous but not essential

    Languages:

  • Ability to speak and write in English is required.

    Complexity of Work:

  • Ability to work autonomously and also within a team environment where appropriate
  • Ability to prioritise workload in a complex environment and work under pressure where required, ensuring high quality, safe and effective patient care
  • Can effectively manage and respond to patients and visitors with challenging behaviour and know when to call for assistance
  • Demonstrates initiative to proactively problem solve with a solution focus, escalating more complex issues as required
  • Being reliable and adaptable, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment
  • Good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy are essential
  • Satisfactory attendance record

    Work Experience/Skills:

  • Experience in coordinating a busy unit is essential
  • The post holder will have a comprehensive knowledge of surgical and/or pre and post-operative nursing and will be able to care for a patient from admission to discharge.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring is essential
  • Experience in any of the surgical wards, day infusion units, pre-op assessment clinics and/or recovery/anaesthetics would be very advantageous
  • Experience in deputising in the absence of the Charge Nurse is advantageous

    Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
